Simple Home Repairs – Part 2

Hello! As we began discussing in part 1, there are simple home repairs a homeowner can do themselves with a little knowledge, some basic tools and your own two hands. Today is all about changing important filters in your home.

Furnace Filters

Changing the furnace filter

If you have forced air heating and cooling your home, changing the furnace filter every three to six months is important. If not done, your furnace needs to work harder, shortening its lifespan and using more energy. The first thing you want to do is look on the edge of your filter for the arrow that points in the direction the air is flowing. You will also see listed here what size filter you need to get, like 16x16x1 or 20x20x2, for example. You will need to get the right size filter and pick the right filter for your needs. The higher the Filter Performance Rating (FPR) the better it will filter out dust, lint, dust mites, pollen pet dander and more. Most of the time you can see this FPR rating listed on the filter or ask your hardware professional. Two tips: 1. Always write the date on the new filter before installing it so that you know when it was last changed, and 2. Put a reminder on your calendar so you remember to change it regularly. Also remember to look at the arrows to know which way the air is moving before removing the old filter so you can replace the new filter the same way.

Water Filter

Finally, let’s talk about changing the refrigerator water filter. If your refrigerator has a water dispenser or ice maker a dirty filter will slow down water dispensing or may be unable to make ice. At least once a year, more depending on how big your family is, you will want to change the water filter in your refrigerator. Refer to your refrigerator’s manual or if you don’t have that you can look up what filter is needed and the steps necessary to replace it by completing an internet search using the refrigerator model number (located on the inside of the refrigerator). Most filters just have a cover that twists off or that pushes in to pop it out. As with the furnace filter I also like to put the date when last changed somewhere by the filter and make a reminder on my calendar to change.
