I Recently did a fun spring project with my five year old son making a bird house together. It was a great way to spend some quality time, or in his words have some “guy time.” It only took a couple of hours to do from start to finish and could go even faster if you order a kit. Let me walk you through the steps in case you would like to do the same!
The first thing we did was pick out a pattern. For this we jumped on the web and found a plan that worked with the materials we already had laying around. For added fun, plan a trip to the lumber yard for materials. A lot of plans you will find online have a material lists already figured out for you.
Next we cut out all the different pieces. Depending on how old your child is this is something you can help them with. Otherwise you can have them supervise for this part of the job. I had my son stack all the pieces after I cut them. We did the cutting outside and ended up having all the neighborhood kids joining in on this part of the build.
Once everything was cut we predrilled holes for the different locations where screws were going. We used my shop drill press but a normal drill will work too. I marked where I wanted the holes drilled and we worked the drill press together.

Once the holes were drilled, it was time to put everything together. I got the screws started and then we worked together to sink the screws into the wood. He loved getting to do this.
Finally, we took the birdhouse and painted it with different colors. After the paint dried we picked a location on a tree where we could watch it from our house and secured it to the tree with a screw.
He is already asking to do a bird feeder next and I look forward to our next “guy time” memories we get to build together.
