Fall Home Maintenance List

As summer gives way to cooler weather, it is a great time to prep your home for Wisconsin’s coldest months. I have gathered my top maintenance recommendations here and turned them into a to-do list for fall maintenance around the home. We are here to help if you need a hand getting your house ready this fall!

Outside the home

  • Clean out leaves from gutters and downspouts.
  • Remove screen windows and install storm windows, if yours are permanent storm windows, ensure they are pulled down and secured for winter.
  • Turn off water supply to outside hose spigot and drain water on outside of house.
  • Drain and clean up all hoses to store for the winter.
  • Place tarps over or store all outside furniture.
  • Drain gas out of lawn mower and store for the winter.
  • Start up the snow blower and tune up as needed.
  • Replace any outdoor burned out lightbulbs.

Inside the home

  • Change the furnace filter and record the date so you remember in three months to change it again – or better yet, set a reminder on your phone.
  • If you have an Aprilaire on your furnace, which is basically a humidifier attached to your furnace, change that filter too.
  • Consider having an HVAC company tune up your furnace for winter.
  • Replace all burned out lightbulbs.
  • Clean dryer vent hoses.
  • If you have a wood burning fireplace, get the chimney cleaned.
  • Change out all battery powered smoke detectors and record the date you changed them.
  • Inspect wether stripping around doors and windows to make sure they are sealing properly.
  • Clean drains in tubs, showers and sinks.

I have a handy printable checklist too, if you’d like to check the boxes as you go!
